The Hotel Del Coronado
San Diego, CA (Coronado)
The Hotel
Located directly on the beach on Coronado Island and considered one of San Diego’s most historic hotels, the iconic red roof has hosted everyone from presidents to celebrities.
The Room
We stayed at the Shore House, which is the newest addition and a step above the main hotel and of course more expensive.
Pros: the rooms were very clean and the hotel was only three floors.
Cons: the roughest towels I have ever experienced at this price point. As a matter of fact I can say I’ve stayed at less expensive hotels and have had softer, fluffier towels. Also, at this price point, I’ve come to expect real rugs in the bathroom and not just some towel that they give you to throw on the floor to step on after a shower. I know I’m nick picking but for what Hilton charges to stay here you should pay attention to every detail.
The VVagal Experience
This hotel was high on my list for southern California Hotels because location, semi-private beach and luxurious surroundings. Full disclosure: we didn’t decide to splurge on this hotel until it became clear that that the August weather in in Miami was not to be trusted. So I didn’t do a deep research regarding the hotel until two weeks out. During the last minute research I found out 1) the Victorian style building of the hotel was undergoing a full renovation and 2) the pacific ocean (which you pay a premium for) might not be safe to get in due to sewage overflow from Tijuana.
Was it worth the splurge? This place is EXPENSIVE, but if you can get a day where you can get in the water without getting a bacteria infection, I would say yes.
